What is Iris Scanner Biometric Device

Iris scanner biometric devices complete the verification and identification process by taking an individual’s iris and applying algorithms to set it into a high-resolution image; the use of iris technology is gradually increasing, and iris technology can be applied in secure and environmentally restricted places;

How an iris scanner works:

An iris scanner is a biometric security device that uses pattern-recognition techniques to identify individuals based on the unique patterns of their irises. Here’s how it generally works:
1. Capture
The scanner uses a high-resolution camera to capture an image of the iris. This is typically done using near-infrared light, which helps to illuminate the intricate details of the iris while minimizing reflections from the cornea.
2. Localization
iris scan system identifies the iris within the captured image. This involves detecting the circular shape of the iris and distinguishing it from other parts of the eye, such as the pupil and the sclera (the white part of the eye).
3. Feature Extraction
Once the iris is localized, the scanner extracts its unique patterns. These patterns include rings, furrows, freckles, and other distinctive features that are unique to each individual.
4. Template Creation

The extracted features are converted into a digital template, which is a mathematical representation of the iris pattern. This template is stored in a database for future comparison.

5. Matching
When an individual needs to be identified or verified, their iris is scanned again, and a new template is created. This template is then compared against the stored templates in the database to find a match. The system uses complex algorithms to ensure a high level of accuracy in matching.
6. Decision
Based on the comparison, the system makes a decision to either confirm the identity of the individual (if a match is found) or deny access (if no match is found).
Iris scanning is considered highly reliable and secure due to the uniqueness and stability of iris patterns over a person’s lifetime.

For end users, if it is too complicated, it can also be simply divided into two main processes of iris recognition.

  1. The first is identity registration: identity registration refers to the recognition device extracting the user’s iris features and adding the extracted feature template to the database of the recognition system.
  2. The second is identity recognition: identity recognition is to extract the iris feature template of the person to be identified and compare it with the registered iris template in the database to give an acceptance or rejection judgment.
