What is AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System)
The automatic fingerprint recognition system is a digital biometric solution system. A large amount of known or unknown fingerprint data is stored in this system. By using the fingerprint algorithm, all the information of this fingerprint information can be found in the huge database, and this operation only takes a few seconds, and the accuracy rate is as high as over 95%.
The history of AFIS
In 1974, the FBI created the first automatic fingerprint system. Due to the limited technology at that time, it was too demanding to store a complete fingerprint image, so the automatic fingerprint system at that time only contained the detailed features of the fingerprint.
With the development of technology and the continuous improvement of the requirements for automatic identification systems, now it is not only able to store a picture completely, but also the system has changed from a single fingerprint to a multi-functional identification system. It is still called an automatic fingerprint identification system. Other identification features are used as auxiliary.
What are the Components of AFIS?
1) Fingerprint Scanners:
Hardware is necessary as a carrier for obtaining information. According to different needs, you can choose a single fingerprint scanner module, such as FAP10~FAP60 different fingerprint image standards. Secondly, if you need multi-dimensional authentication, you can choose a mobile multi-functional terminal device, which is compatible with fingerprint scanners and has data transmission functions, and can directly upload data to the server.
2) Motherboard:
The hardware device also has a CPU, which can store chips with multiple functions, such as functions, such as data transmission functions. Only with the motherboard can we prepare for the next step.
3) Database:
All operations of the automatic fingerprint recognition system are for data, and the fingerprint image is eventually converted into a string of binary code for storage. Therefore, it is necessary to consider whether to store it locally or in the cloud. To store it in the cloud, you need to prepare a secure database system.
4) Fingerprint Algorithms:
Algorithms are an indispensable part of the AFIS system and may even affect the operation of the entire system. A good algorithm can quickly and accurately search and match fingerprint data. Algorithms are also the most important part of each company, so the basic algorithms will be different.
5) User Interface:
All devices have different interfaces, such as USB interface and serial port. Different interfaces also correspond to different functions, which are used for data transmission between devices and computers, or for upgrading the device itself, etc. Charging interface
How AFIS Works?
1) Data Collection:
The first step of the AFIS workflow is to collect your fingerprint data. You can use a single-mode fingerprint scanner or a multi-mode device for fingerprint collection. Save the collected image. This step saves the original image, that is, the unprocessed image.
2) Image Processing:
The second step is to process the collected fingerprint image to improve the quality of the fingerprint image and eliminate problems that affect the comparison, such as distortion or noise.
3) Feature Extraction:
The third step is to enhance the feature points of the fingerprint image. Everyone’s fingerprint feature points are different, so you can generate a fingerprint feature image based on these feature points. Your personal information is on this fingerprint feature image and is unique.
4) Template Matching:
The fourth step is template matching. When a new fingerprint is submitted for identification, the system will extract the feature points of the new fingerprint and compare them with the image features that already exist in the database;
5) Identification or Verification
According to the comparison results in the fourth step, match whether you are you or who you are. If the match is successful, register it. If the match fails, reprocess it.
What Are the Key Applications of AFIS?
1) Law Enforcement:
AFIS is the most mature and widely used project for law enforcement. It can be divided into two parts
Background Investigation:
During routine inspections, law enforcement agencies can use fingerprint information to verify population information to see if there are any unregistered persons. It can quickly and timely understand the local population situation.
Suspect Tracking:
The AFIS system can search for other information about the person in the database based on the fingerprint information provided, and can quickly and accurately locate the suspect’s information.
2) Government Project:
Presidential Election:
In some parts of Africa, there are many plans to use the AFIS system to complete the presidential election, such as the Philippines, Ghana, Tanzania, etc. By using the AFIS system, the fairness, authenticity, and efficiency of the election can be effectively improved
Digital ID:
The promotion of digital ID is gradually supported by many regions. Recently, the Vietnamese government will vigorously provide information to ensure that the Vietnamese digital ID is carried out perfectly as scheduled.
These projects all rely on the uniqueness and authenticity of the AFIS system.
3) Border Control and Immigration:
The Border Immigration Bureau needs to check people from all over the world every day. The AFIS system meets this demand, strengthens border security, effectively blocks unsafe factors, and can also count the number of immigrants.
4) Banking and Financial Services:
Some areas in Africa will set up relief funds. When the AFIS system is used, the system will automatically issue your subsidy amount to you after the authentication and identification is successful. While reducing manpower and material resources, it also improves the utilization rate of funds.
5) Telecommunications:
In Tanzania, Pakistan’s one-person-one-card policy has also been adopted. Each user can only register one phone card. How to prove it? Through the AFIS system, the information of one person and one card will be entered into the system. There is no such thing as one person holding multiple cards
The AFIS Advantages and Disadvantages
Avantages
1)Reduce fraud
The intervention of AFIS can ensure the authenticity of user information and reduce the behavior of information theft and fraud
2) Improve security
Improve security, strangers cannot use your information to commit illegal acts
Désavantages:
1) Software professionalism
AFIS requires a complete system to be implemented, so a mature or experienced software team is needed to implement and maintain it later
2) Data security
All behaviors are based on fingerprint image data, so the security of all data needs to be guaranteed. Once hacked, a large amount of data will flow out, which is a very bad result
AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) Market Trends
In 2020, the value of AFIS reached 8.42 billion US dollars, and it will reach 68 billion US dollars in 2030. From 2021 to 2030, the CAGR reached 23%. And there is still a chance to continue to rise
Résumé
AFIS system can be well applied to places for identity recognition and comparison.
